It’s what every writer’s dream is, earn a living doing what he/she loves best, writing. Edgar Allen Poe, Baltimore’s beloved writer did just that, although his first piece was written and published anonymously. He was brother to William and Rosalie Poe. Edgar Poe would later adapt the full name Edgar Allen Poe, taking the Allen name given to him by the family that would raise him after his parent’s passing at a young age. Poe attended the University of Virginia, a school founded by Thomas Jefferson. His stint in the university would not last long as vices such as gambling and drinking would catch up to him. Poe would come to blame his foster family for not continuing his education, claiming they did not support him, but his addictions were probably that which did him in. Following these accusations he and the family would become estranged. It was because of those addictions, that the troubled Poe would lose his soon to be wife, the beautiful Sarah Elmira Royster.

A series of gigs kept him a float for a while, but not long enough and the discouraged Poe became a soldier, under the pseudonym Edgar A. Perry. His time in the United States Army served as inspiration as he published a collection of poems “Tamerlane and Other Poems”. He was not credited for this collection, as Edgar Allen Poem, which may have been a blessing in disguise, as it was a flop. It sold just over an embarrassing forty copies. Poe made a living in the service, but ultimately was not happy there. He would enlist the help of his estranged foster father, who did not respond until the passing of his wife finally allowed him to forgive Poe.

Trying to find himself Poe would take shelter in Baltimore with some distant family. Bitter family feuds finally led to the end of any relationship Poe would hold with his father. He would serve in West Point for a bit, before heading back to Baltimore, to tend to his dying brother. Perhaps a broken heart caused Poe to dive into his writing despite strife in the publishing field. He bobbed up and down in the poetry waters for a bit, before returning to prose (stories rooted by actual events). It was here he started to achieve some acclaim, as a Baltimore newspaper awarded his piece “MS Found in a Bottle”. A Big Shot helped him get a job with the “Southern Literary Messenger”, so off to Richmond he set, but not for long.

Once again Poe shot him self in the foot as he was found polluted on the job several times. Poe would try again to clean up his act and received his job back, promising to stay sober. Things started to look up for Poe, as he would marry his much younger cousin Virginia Clemm, in Baltimore. The “Southern Literary Messenger”, was flying of the stands under his watch. Numerous publications beckoned his writing and he succeeded at each task. The next few months he would reside in Maryland, Philadelphia and New York.

As his wife fell ill, he fell to the bottle again, but still managed to get work out there and the “Raven” came to life. Despite the “Raven’s” success Poe remained a fixture at local bars in Baltimore. It was on a Baltimore street that Poe was found stumbling around intoxicated, just before he died. He is buried in Baltimore at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Although he moved about in his career, Baltimore seems to have embraced his legacy, thus naming their football team the Baltimore Ravens.

Baltimore, Maryland is a vibrant city situated along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay about 180 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. It is a major tourist destination in the Mid Atlantic region of USA near Washington, D.C. Named after Lord Baltimore in the Irish House of Lords, the city has a flourishing population of more than 650,000 with a rich cultural heritage.

The major tourist attraction is the Inner harbor. This historic seaport is an iconic landmark and perfect blend of the old with the new. The breathtaking view of the waterfront is simply amazing and the docks and streets surrounding the inner harbor houses hotels, museums, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues.

The new Inner harbor is now home to the Harborplace, an entertainment center and the National Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world. Port Discovery Children’s Museum, and the World Trade Center of Baltimore are also located around the basin.

Baltimore is famous for its outstanding fresh seafood. From the nearby Chesapeake Bay come blue crabs, oysters, striped bass and other delicacies. Other Maryland seafood comes the Atlantic coast, including sea scallops, lobsters, sea bass and other fish.

Fishing is a popular pastime at Baltimore. Fishermen target striped bass, known in Maryland as “rockfish”, as well as fish such as croaker, spot, white perch, flounder and bluefish.

Rockfish are the un-disputed icon of Chesapeake Bay fishing. Anglers chum, live bait, troll, jig, cast artificial lures and fly fish for rockfish. The beautiful fish range from schoolies of 16 inches to monster fish that may weigh 50 pounds are more.

Croaker or “hardhead” are commonly caught in the bay waters near Annapolis. The fish get their names because of the “croaking” noise the make when removed from the water.

Panfish such as Norfolk spot and white perch are caught near the city. Both species are fun to catch and suitable for anglers of all ages. These delicious fish are caught around the bay bridge, in creeks and around oyster beds.

Anglers seeking spot or perch use standard 2 hook rigs, using small hooks and small pieces of bait. Popular baits include bloodworms, shrimp, clam and synthetic bloodworm type baits.

Other water activities include crabbing. Enthusiasts use trotlines, traps or dipnets to catch blue crabs, which Baltimore and Maryland in general is famous for. The delicious shellfish are then steamed whole and the meat separated out. Crabmeat can be eaten as is or made into crabcakes, soups or other dishes.

Baltimore does not experience the extremes of weather change that occur in other parts of USA. The weather is relatively mild and the best time to visit is from April to November. The city is well connected by road, air and sea. From Washington DC it is less than one hour north on Route 95. Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) is only a half-hour drive south of downtown.

Moving inside the city is easy and loads of options like light rail system are available. Water taxis are a unique and interesting option. The taxis transit the harbor and offer unique views of the Baltimore skyline.

What is a smooth coat Goldendoodle?

A smooth coat Goldendoodle  is of course, a Goldendoodle……but, a Goldendoodle with a very easy coat to maintain and a Goldendoodle that has a very similar appearance to the purebred Golden Retriever. There are, however, differences.

The smooth coat Goldendoodle may seem to have a similar appearance as that of a purebred Golden Retriever, but you will notice their legs may be long like the Poodle…..their muzzle may be slender like the Poodle……..they may have some fluff about the ears and neck and of course, their bone structure may be more petite, similar to the Poodle.

Since creating Goldendoodles  in 1999, we know now that there are three coat types for the Goldendoodle dog:

A. Shaggy

B. Curly

C. Smooth

We obtained our very first smooth coat in 2007 when we decided to breed one of our blue eyed, curly coat Goldendoodles to one of our purebred Golden Retrievers. “Meeryn” (as seen up above in the photo) was our very first smooth coat Goldendoodle. Our intention of the pairing for her parents was to attempt to have at least one blue eyed doodle pup or one with multi eye color. It did not happen with this pairing. We found it interesting as well that there was just 1 smooth coat doodle born in a litter of six. The rest were males who had a shaggy coat. We were pleased to find out that the Golden

Retriever temperament was set in the offspring.

Some breeders have asked us how can you tell if their Goldendoodle puppy is going to be a smooth coat, curly coat or shaggy coat and our answer has always been, you’ll have to wait until the puppy is closer to six weeks of age. There are particular signs to look for that go with the three coat types. An experienced breeder will know over time that if they have Goldendoodles paired up in a particular way, they will have one or more of each coat type. The inexperienced breeder has to wait for the puppy to become closer to six or eight weeks of age.

With the smooth coat, their body coat will appear to turning fluffy but there will be no evidence upon the face of the usual signs that a ****** beard is forming. All Goldendoodle puppies, except for the smooth coat, will have what we call an “upside down V shape” with the ****** coat hairs, between the eyes down to the nose. If you are looking at the puppy directly, start looking between the eyes and you should notice what looks like an upside down “V” shape that starts between the eyes and spreads outwards away from the muzzle. As a young puppy, the hairs will still be short, but there will evidence of the ****** beard forming from little hairs sticking out and away from the face. As the puppy matures, the hairs will continue to grow outward until it forms a ****** beard. The smooth coat doodle is completely void of this usual ****** beard. The curly coat Goldendoodle has a ****** beard as well, but their coat is curly from the nose to their tail and the beard, while there, is not as pronounced as that of the shaggy coat.

The inexperienced breeder has difficulty at times, understanding the coat changes all Goldendoodles go through. A Goldendoodle will go through as many as ten to fifteen different coat changes from the time they are born up until the day they turn one year of age. The smooth coat Goldendoodle will go through fewer coat changes than the shaggy coat doodle and the curly coat Goldendoodle will seem to be curly up until around ten to twelve weeks of age and then their coat will seem to have “flat” patches…but this is merely a coat change. As the curly coat Goldendoodle continues to mature, their curls will reappear once again. The Goldendoodle’s coat will stop maturing at the age of one year. The coat the doodle has at the age of one year, is what it is. Some inexperienced breeders tell their customers that their doodle who is void of a ****** beard, will grow it by the time they are a year old. This is not accurate. A smooth coat Goldendoodle will never have a ****** beard at anytime during its life. A Goldendoodle that does not have any evidence of a ****** beard by the time it is eight weeks of age, will never have one. We have come to know that the ****** beard, even if the hairs are short, will be evident at a very young age.

The shaggy coat Goldendoodle’s ****** hairs sprout out and away from the face even at the age of eight weeks. The smooth coat Goldendoodle will appear to have a fluffy coat at the age of eight weeks, but they will have no evidence of a ****** beard. The body coat will eventually slough off through its multiple coat changes and will become very similar to the purebred Golden Retriever. However, there will be evidence of feathering around the legs, underbody and the tail that is very similar to the purebed Golden Retriever.

A family had sent us the photo up above who had purchased their doodle from a different breeder and had questions about whether or not their doodle was a smooth coat or shaggy coat. Because I was not sure of the exact age of the doodle in the photo up above, it appeared this doodle was approx. four to six months of age. In our particular shaggy coat doodles, we would have already seen evidence of a ****** beard and a much shaggier coat. The owners to the doodle up above told me that their doodle was a 50/50 mixture…meaning, one of his parents was a Poodle and the other parent was a Golden Retriever. If this was the case, then my answer to them would be that perhaps their doodle is a late bloomer. I have personally never seen a Goldendoodle be completely void of a ****** beard by this age, coming from a 50/50 mixture but I do remember that a doodle we had sold many, many years ago…Riley….did take longer to get a shaggy coat and his ****** beard because he had picked up so much Golden Retriever that he himself was a “late bloomer”. We saw further evidence from photos the owner had sent to us (and those photos can be found at our Goldendoodle World website  under the link “Meet Riley”) that he did indeed finally get his ****** beard and his shaggy coat, even though his shaggy coat was shorter than we usually see in our shaggy coat Goldendoodles. When genetics sway closer to the Golden Retriever side, it is possible for the doodle to obtain a ****** beard and shaggy coat later as a puppy….but if it has not appeared by the age of one year, it will never happen. There are many people who want a Goldendoodle that has more of a Golden Retriever appearance, so this look is always acceptable. There will of course be some shedding issues with Goldendoodles who pick up more Golden Retriever genes. We have found, however, that the shedding is still by far less than the purebred Golden Retriever…..but it is more than a shaggy coat or a curly coat.

Paden, up above with his blue toy, is a green eyed smooth coat Goldendoodle from our Goldendoodle World who has a chocolate colored nose, eye trim and pawpads. He resides with his happy family in Maryland. Paden came out of a litter of three smooth coats and one shaggy coat. Surprisingly enough, we did not get a single curly coat from the litter that came from two curly coat blue eyed doodles we had paired together. Theoretically, a breeder would assume that if they paired up two curly coat blue eyed doodles, that they would obtain curly coat blue eyed offspring. This was not the case in our experience. What we did see was one brown eyed shaggy coat, two blue eyed smooth coats and one green eyed smooth coat (Paden). The brown eyed shaggy coat male was our typical Goldendoodle that we generally see coming out of our 50/50 Goldendoodles. We were very surprised to see three smooth coats coming from two curly coat Goldendoodles. We did, however, see two of the smooth coats have blue eyes and the one cream smooth coat, Paden, have green eyes. The Goldendoodle dog has always fascinated us because they seem to break every genetic rule we’ve read thus far. It does prove our point that we’ve said since 1999, that the parents of a Goldendoodle does NOT play a 100% role in the outcome of the doodle offspring, rather the entire lineage of the doodle offspring plays a very important role in their appearance, their coat type, their eye color and so on. We have literally seen offspring turn out to look very different from each other and we’ve seen offspring turn out to look nearly identical. A Goldendoodle breeder can never say for sure, before the offspring matures, what exact appearance their doodles will have because Goldendoodles break every rule that we purebred breeders have come to know from years of experience. It is also the same that the Goldendoodle breeder can never say that all of their doodle offspring will be the same exact size…per litter…based on the size of the parents. They will be wrong every time. Goldendoodles can vary in height and weight amongst each other in any given litter and the weight difference can be dramatic or it can be slight. This is why Goldendoodles can never be placed into size categories. Purebred dogs can be lumped into size categories because it has been the general experience of purebred dog fanciers that the offspring of purebred dogs will generally turn out to be very close to the size of one parent or the other, regardless of gender. Because it is true that males and females are not particular sizes based on gender, it has always bewildered me as to why most kennel clubs will show the males being larger than the females when in fact, we’ve seen some purebred females weighing more than their brothers, as an adult dog. With Goldendoodles, every individual puppy in any given litter will either weigh more or less than each other, regardless of gender. We did, however, see that doodles will be closer in size to each other if they come from two Goldendoodles being bred together or if they come from a Goldendoodle bred to a Poodle or a Golden Retriever. Why this is, we can only assume that its because the Goldendoodle already has both breeds in its genetic make up and when paired up with another purebred dog that is already in its DNA, this may be why the doodle offspring stay closer to each other in size. Only a true DNA analysis of each individual puppy would reveal the actual answer.

We do know for a fact that the smooth coat Goldendoodle can be of any color; can have any eye color and will only occur with the following pairings:

1. Two Goldendoodles bred together, regardless of coat type.

2. One curly coat Goldendoodle bred to a purebred Golden Retriever.

3. One shaggy coat Goldendoodle bred to a purebred Golden Retriever.

A smooth coat Goldendoodle will never occur from a 50/50 pairing. We do know that the temperament seems to be

set that is very similar to the purebred Golden Retriever for a Goldendoodle that comes from a Goldendoodle and a purebred Golden Retriever pairing. We, ourselves, prefer the temperament of Goldendoodles that come from a Goldendoodle/Golden Retriever pairing simply because we are Golden Retriever fans and enjoy the temperament of the Golden Retriever.

The man behind the Oakland Raiders was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame on August 1, 1992. Raider’s owner Al Davis started his pro football coaching career four decades ago as assistant coach for the LA Chargers. The rest can be called as history since Davis went on to be the head coach and general manager of the Raiders from then on.

When he first took over the Oakland franchise, the team barely won any games in the first few seasons of the new American Football League. Because of this, he challenged himself to be the one to build one of the finest franchise in the league. The year 1966 was a big year for Davis when he became the Commissioner of the American Football League. It was also during this year that he became the principal owner and CEO of the Raiders. The legacy that Al Davis leaves for sports history is unparalleled in terms of winning and excellence.

Just like any other football hopeful, Davis started as a line coach at the Adelphi College in New York. He eventually went into the U.S. Army and was assigned as the head coach for football in Ft. Belvoir in Virginia. This was the first time that his great ability for coaching was seen by the public when he built a really powerful team to topple the National Collegiate Football Champions at that time – the University of Maryland. His career went further when he served the Baltimore Colts as a staff who concentrated on player personnel work. In 1955, he also worked as a line coach and chief recruiter at The Citadel. He also spent three years as a line coach at the University of Southern California.

Before being the Oakland Raiders head coach and general manager in 1963, Davis served as the offensive end coach for the LA Chargers for two years. When he started coaching the Raiders, the team got an impressive 10-4 record. Because of this feat, Davis was named Coach of the Year by several publications and his fellow coaches. He further made history with the nine-win turnaround in one season. Also, he was the first sports man recognized by the Oakland Chamber of Commerce when he was selected as the Young Man of the Year.

When he was commissioner of the AFL, he was thought to be the driving force who made the merger between the AFL and NFL possible. His presence in the NFL Competition Committee and NFL Owners Executive Committee made a significant bearing on the overall development of the game. He also became the first recipient of the NFL Players Association’s Retired Players Award of Excellence.

With these achievements, it can easily be said that Al Davis indeed is one heck of a sportsman. And he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame more than any one else. It’s amazing how one man can make such a big difference in the world of football. Even more amazing is how Al Davis have accomplished these feats in his lifetime.

Sitting on the Atlantic Coast, bordered by New Hampshire, Vermont, New York State and Connecticut, the state of Maryland is regarded as the wealthiest of all in the United States of America. The average household income in Maryland, which has a population of around five and three quarter million is around sixty five thousand dollars. Science and technology is where the Maryland earns these big bucks, as well as transportation from its docks to the large population and manufacturing centers along the East Coast. Total state income is a staggering $250 billion dollars annually. Sounds like paradise? Well it could be, except for the fact that there is no casino gambling in Maryland. Well at least not for the time being.

Yet let us not detract from the achievements and attractions of this state which is steeped in history. Its capitol, Annapolis sings out the founding of the country with its fabulously classic Colonial architecture and its immaculately preserved 18th century waterfront. A must for any visitor to the state is the US Naval Academy and its museum.

Much of the states population resides in and around the city of Baltimore, the financial and business center of the state. Major tourist attractions around Baltimore are the scene of the Antietam National Battlefield as well as the National Cemetery at Sharpsburg. Frederick and St. Mary’s City are two famous historic towns where visitors can take a step back in time to the colonial era. The famous and picturesque Chesapeake Bay is situated on Maryland’s eastern shores and its many estuaries and rivers provide is a veritable haven for lovers of sea food. Maryland proudly boasts the longest waterfronts in the United States, dotted with an endless stream of restaurants serving up freshly caught and cooked fare that the sea can offer.

Marylanders are great horse racing enthusiasts. Many of them attend the annual Preakness and Pimlico Cup horse races in Baltimore as well as many more out of state visitors flock to these traditional sporting events. The strange fact is that until the late sixties, casino gambling was legal in the state and was fairly active and enjoyed by many. In 1973, a state lottery was introduced and has proved highly popular, bringing with it sizeable revenues. There is also gambling on horse racing and greyhound racing events held on a regular basis, where betting is allowed trackside.

People who want to play table games such as Blackjack, Roulette or Craps as well as slots have two simple choices: one travel to one of the neighboring states for some live casino action, or two, to gamble online in the comfort and security of their own home. Neither of these prospects appears to be too daunting for the cash rich Marylanders. However the hope is that forward thinking legislators will wake up and realize that the cash that is flowing out of the state can be returned. This can be done by taking the simple step of allowing the opening of land based casinos where the hard working population of the state can spend their leisure time as they see fit, whilst contributing to the state funds.

Maryland enjoys honor of being one of the oldest and wealthiest sates of the Union. There are total of four brackets of income tax in Maryland taxes ranging from 2% to 4.75%. Maryland being one of the last states to undertake this also levies piggyback taxes at local level also. These piggyback taxes ranges from 1.25% and go until 3.2%.

In Maryland state, commerce plays an important role in its economy and these revenues supports it. To keep running the state, Maryland needs to keep its busy ports functional and clean for which it requires money which is generated by these Maryland taxes.

You would be surprised to know that the property taxes are not specified in Maryland. However, sales tax is levied at 5% in the state. Moreover, the rates are adjusted in a manner so that it can help provide essential revenues from one county or city to another.

Such adjustments are done annually and are disclosed via a public announcement to dicuss the new tax rates. Taxes in the state are assessed both on land as well as land improvements. An appraisal of the market value of property is done and then it is taxed according to its assessed value. Expanding businesses can even receive credits upon the improvements for their property. Maryland taxes exempt properties used or owned by churches or by any other non-profit organizations.

Maryland taxes are set up like many other states to assist in boom of businesses. Whenever any business establishes itself in Enterprise Zones, it not only improves the value of other commercial properties but also receive tax credits which can last up to ten years or more altogether.

Enterprise Zones are those zones which were considered economically distressed. If you are a developing company then such combination of land tax credits would ease your burden to a large extent. Businesses can also be benefitted by credit upon their Maryland taxes by specializing in fields such as research and development or biotechnology. Women and minority owned businesses would also receive good incentives.

If you compare the taxes in Maryland with other states you would find it to be considerably very higher. Many people who work in nation’s capital usually belong to Maryland only. It would not be wrong to say that the state is highly progressive and notably diverse in numerous ways. Most of the taxes are now imposed at county or city level along with state taxes.

No city, county etc. are deprived of funds as there is abundant revenue with them. Local tax revenue funds all the programs, parks or schools and they stay well funded. It is becoming a center for many businesses as various types of tax credits are often offered to new and old companies.

It all started when the first English occupants in America have built their colonies in the 1600’s. The Americans have been criticizing these *********** relationships because they do not want a black slave to marry a white person. These relationships have been highly contested in the states of Pennsylvania, North and South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Maryland where there are laws that prohibited *********** marriage.

By the year 1691, the state of Virginia have charged serious offenses to *********** couples and labeling their siblings to be bastards and outcast in the society. When the 13th amendment on the American constitution was instituted in 1865 in some southern states of America, slavery on blacks was abolished. However, *********** marriage is not yet allowed and will still be banned from every part of the country. The reason is, many white Americans do not want any black slaves or Native Americans pollute their genuine white race.

Many believe that 70 percent of black Americans nowadays are descendants of *********** couples. Many great black Americans that have lived like Martin Luther King Jr. and Booker T. Washington came from black and white ancestors. In the civil war era where blacks have been fighting for equal rights, Frederick Douglas was very vocal on saying that *********** marriage can trigger the acceptance of the exiled black slaves in the American society.

When the Supreme Court has abolished the last anti-miscegenation laws on *********** marriages, there was a great increase on the number of relationships that involved blacks and whites. Although the law now accepts it, there is still the existence of cultural betrayal. Many black Americans believe that whenever their children are dating or suppose to marry a white, they are betraying their families and especially their cultural heritage.

Many *********** couples have fought for this kind of relationship to be accepted with open arms in every society because they believe that it can come up to be the solution on racial prejudice and racial conflicts. They call for reconciliation because they see the world one day living in equality and racism is no more tolerated. More importantly, race is not an issue anymore because everybody is unified as one in the eyes of God, which is the human race.

Interracial relationships have some advantages and disadvantages, although there could be a number of advantages to be identified but some may encounter problems when they are in *********** relationships. Here are some that can be advantageous or disadvantageous in some aspects.

1.It can bring to a more colorful family history. Family members can learn more on their heritage and their ancestors. It can be an interesting subject whenever there are stories why their ancestors came to this place and how they have lived their lives even they have different races.

2.It could be more appealing to others, if the person is a combination of two different races. The feeling of uniqueness can be an attraction especially if the person knows how to blend well to different societies. In some instances a person with *********** heritage can feel fresh if he has places to visit if both of his parents came from two different countries.

3.If a person is hanging out with someone with a different racial origin, there is the opportunity to learn the person’s culture and tradition. These can be very interesting subjects to carry as the person goes home, and he may share to his peers what he had learned and experience.

4. Sometimes the acceptance can be very disturbing. There are some people that cannot get over on the reality that people can now live together even with different races. Most parents in this generation that have children that are product of *********** relationships still experience some isolated cases of discrimination and prejudice.

5.There are also cases where there are children that were born on *********** relationships come back to their heritage to get some revenge because of the racial issue that were not accepted in their situations. This could not be a good resort to get over the anger and hatred. Some people do these things as their responsibility to point out their reasons. These instances may lead to family conflicts and feud.

Interracial relationships may be good or bad depending on one’s principle. No matter what origin or race the person may come from, it is important that people realize that all people are created equal in eyes of God. People must learn how to accept no matter what the color, the race and tradition.

The US currently has about 700 megawatts of installed solar panel electricity generation connected to the grid, according to research by the consulting firm, Navigant. This represents less than 1% of all the electricity generated in the US.

Each state controls the speed of solar adoption by heir independent policies. If these policies remain nchanged, generation from solar panels in the US, both commercial and residential generators are expected to grow to 6,000 megawatts by the year 2015.

Three thousand of the 6,000 megawatts will be generated in California. The incentive programs of California are the gold standard among supporters of solar power. Growth in the home solar-power market will not take off until more states adopt favorable net metering rules. The relaxed solar implementation can offset the cost of installing renewable power system and capture electricity that is being loss from the potential solar generation. The Navigant report estimates that an additional 3,000 megawatts of solar panel electricity could be available in the next eight years if the states with solar implementation limitations lifted their caps.

There are eight states that have no net-metering rules. These states are South Dakota, Kansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Arizona and my own state, South Carolina. A list compiled by New Energy Source lists California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland receiving the highest scores for solar adaptation with the remaining states of lower scores because of restrictive laws.

As of September 2007, 39 states had adopted some measures of rules to compensate consumers for sending self-generated renewable power to the grid. There is a lot behind the scenes that the states and power generation companies are willing to wage a serious fight to preclude Federal mandates to push solar renewable energy.

In my state of South Carolina, the Santee Electrical Cooperative, which is owned by the state of South Carolina, is proposing a $998 million dollar coal burning generators. The site has been put on hold by the federal government for a deeper study of the environmental impact. Meanwhile, Santee continues the fight with their commissioned study. Their study concludes “$900 million in economic output, $500 million in earnings and 9,300 jobs for South Carolinians” Unfortunately; Santee made no attempt to study the environmental impact or what a combination of renewable/nonrenewable future actions would mean to the state.

The federal renewable fuels bill has been stopped in the US Senate. Southern Co., American Electric Power Co. and other coal fired producers hired top Washington lobbyists, including Rudy Giuliani’s firm, to help defeat a measure that would force them to boost electricity generated by wind, solar and other forms of renewable energy to 15 percent of the U.S. total by 2020. That’s up from less than 2 percent today, and is a move the industry says would cost at least $67 billion. Southern Co. has spent $7.26 million this year lobbying Congress, more than Exxon Mobil Corp. or General Motors Corp., according to the Washington-based Center for Responsive Politics. It hired such firms as Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, where Republican presidential front-runner Giuliani is a partner. The bill would require utilities to obtain 2.75 percent of their power from renewable sources starting in 2010, ramping that up to 15 percent by 2020. Almost one-quarter of the mandate could be met by improving efficiency. Companies that fail to meet the standard would have to pay a penalty to the federal government. The cooperative of Southern Co and other generating companies consider this too high of a barrier and appear to have succeeded to remove the renewable fuel section from the bill going to President Bush.

The average homeowner does not have a vote in adopting renewable fuels electrical generation standards. The battle is being conducted by the state and federal government and powerful electrical generating companies. The problem is that the average homeowner will be the big loser in this struggle. Our major recourse is to write our state and federal representative to adopt measure that we can utilize the potential cost savings and reduces pollution of solar generated electricity.

Our letters to our government representatives should ask for means to:

* Encourage greater renewable-energy generation

* Promote customer-sited distributed generation (wind and solar fuels)

* Reduce demand on an ever increasingly strained grid

* Reward investment in renewable technologies

* Facilitate energy independence

* Improve air quality and public health

* Promote in-state economic development.

Most states that have revised their interconnection and net-metering policies have done so in pursuit of these same goals.
